Summer Fun Still Going Strong at Library; Local History & Genealogy Department Manager Retires

July 27, 2012 — The school supplies aisles of local stores may be bustling, but the Library is still basking in the carefree days of summer.

  • On Tuesday, there’s a Harry Potter Birthday Movie Marathon at 1 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium for teens in grades 7-12. Come in wizard garb, play Potter-style games, read and see favorite Potter film clips and watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Parts 1 and 2, rated PG-13.
  • That night at 7 p.m. in the Library Station’s Story Hour Room, all ages are invited to a Pajama Party, in your pjs, for stories, games and activities.
  • At noon on Wednesday for Brentwood Branch Library’s Armchair University series, pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist Dr. Stephen Clum will discuss how to get a good night’s sleep, and what to do about those elusive Zzzzzs.
  • At 1 p.m. Saturday, come watch the Stars of Brentwood (Branch) Talent Show. The end-of-summer show features the talents of entrants from infants to grade 12.

If you love the Big Band sound, you’ll enjoy Joe Costantino at 7 p.m. Monday at the Library Center when he resumes his series of talks about the Big Band Cavalcade.

During his career in radio and television, Joe worked with entertainers from Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra to Woody Herman. He’s sharing the legends, video and music of the leaders of the Big Band era. After Monday, the series concludes on Aug. 6.

Anyone who has done historical or genealogical research at the Library in the past 31 years has probably crossed paths with local history librarian Michael Glenn.

Michael was manager of the Local History & Genealogy Department at then-Main Library, now the Midtown Carnegie Branch, and moved to the Library Center when it opened in November 1999. Over the years he has built up the rare book collection, helped preserve endangered Ozarks historical materials and helped make historical collections accessible to the world through digitization and sharing on the Internet.

Sad to say, Michael is retiring from his Library career on Wednesday, Aug. 1. But if you hurry, you can make one last effort to stump him with your toughest question before he packs up and leaves.
