"Outcasts United" Author Featured at Lecture and Book Signings

September 20, 2012 —
The public has two opportunities to meet and hear best-selling author and New York Times feature writer Warren St. John at a lecture and book signing Oct. 9 at Missouri State University, and a book signing on Oct. 10 at the Library Center.

St. John is author of “Outcasts United: A Refugee Team, an American Town (2009), which incoming MSU freshmen are reading as the 2012-2013 Common Reader selection. The public has also been invited to participate with the students by reading the book this year.

St. John will talk about “Outcasts United” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts. A book signing will follow his talk, and books will be available for purchase.

Free tickets are available to the public at Hammons Hall, the JQH Arena and Plaster Student Union ticket offices. The event is co-sponsored by MSU’s Office of Public Affairs Support and the Student Activity Council.

The author will also be available to visit and sign his book from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Library Center concourse. Books will be available for purchase.

“Outcasts United” is also the topic of library book discussions this fall:
• Oct. 25, 7 p.m., Coffee Ethic next door to Park Central Branch
• Nov. 1, 6:30 p.m., Brentwood Branch

St. John’s research for “Outcasts United” led to an acclaimed series of New York Times stories about the Clarkston youth soccer team called the Fugees and the struggle of Clarkston to adapt to its new identity. He is also the best-selling author of “Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer: A Road Trip into the Heart of Fan Mania” (2004.
