Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale Hits $125,779.01 All-time High

October 30, 2012 —  Book, music and movie lovers from all across the Ozarks helped push the Friends of the Library 2012 Fall Book Sale to a record-high $125,779.01 in sales. The event ran Oct. 23-28 at Remington’s, with a Friends Night Preview Sale Oct. 22.

“We are just thrilled and can hardly believe it,” said Friends President and sale co-chair Pat Myers. The legendary Friends book sales hit an all-time high just six months ago during the 2012 Spring Book Sale, when Friends saw $121,522.85 in sales.

Individuals and the Springfield-Greene County Libraries weed and donate books, DVDs, CDs and audiobooks throughout the year; the Friends members collect, sort, price and store the haul until it’s time for the sales in the spring and fall.

The Friends began this sale with four tractor-trailer loads of items and sold most of them. Some of the remaining books were donated to nonprofit agencies in the Springfield area, some were recycled and others will be stored for the Spring 2013 sale April 22-28.

Among the shoppers were three Republic Schools elementary librarians, who bought some 500 books to help build the collection for a new elementary school. The librarians estimated the 500 books would have cost about $8,000 retail. They got the collection for $950, said Interim Superintendent Vicki Neal.

Another avid reader took advantage of the book sale and paid her bill with a personal check. She was 100 years old.

On behalf of the Friends, Myers thanked all those who donated books through the year for resale, those who shopped during the event, the army of volunteers that worked the sale all week and the individuals and businesses that donated goods and services – including all the cardboard boxes and grocery sacks.
