Brentwood Branch Update: Help Us Recycle a House for Re-Do Project

April 26, 2013 — We’re taking our first steps with the Brentwood Branch renovation project, and you can be a part of it.

The Library owns the house at 1911 E. Wayland Drive, adjacent to the Brentwood Branch, and it must come down to make way for the project. So we’re going to “reduce, reuse and recycle” it with the help of Habitat for Humanity and the Ozarks Green Building Coalition. Several private businesses are also donating their services.

Under Habitat’s supervision, crews spent last week gutting the interior, and all those items were to be sold to the public April 27 on the property.

Crews will return on Monday and begin deconstructing the exterior, and Habitat will conduct a sale of those exterior materials and any leftover interior items at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4, on the Wayland property. Ozarks Green Building Coalition and Habitat for Humanity will split the proceeds, and the Library will hire someone to haul any non-recyclable material to the landfill.

The May 4 yard sale will be a do-it-yourselfer’s dream. Exterior items include windows and exterior doors, framing lumber, a garage door, chain link fencing, landscaping items and more. (Some additional materials will not be included in the sale because they will go to recycling centers.)

With this one project we can accomplish so much. The all-volunteer labor saves taxpayers in demolition costs, two agencies share sales proceeds to further their community projects, the Library minimizes what goes to the landfill while reusing and recycling valuable resources, and the recycling effort could strengthen the Library’s application if it decides to pursue LEED building certification in the Brentwood renovation project.

The Library bought the Wayland property in August 2012 with the City of Springfield, and is pursuing rezoning of the property. It will allow for additional parking for the Brentwood Branch and a neighborhood buffer.

Dake Wells Architecture designed the renovation, and the public is welcome to see the plans on display at the Brentwood Branch, 2214 Brentwood Blvd.
