Library Awarded $6,000 Grant for The Big Read 2014

May 30, 2013 — The Springfield-Greene County Library District was awarded a $6,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to fund programs for its one book, one community celebration, The Big Read, in April 2014, the NEA announced this week.

The library was one of 77 grantees including public libraries, literary organizations, universities and arts councils. In its eighth year of The Big Read, the NEA awarded $1 million in grants to nonprofits for Big Read projects.

Managed by Arts Midwest, The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. The Big Read provides communities the opportunity to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 30 selections from U.S. and world literature.

Each community's Big Read includes a kick-off event and activities devoted specifically to its Big Read book, including lectures, films, exhibits, book discussions and live performances.

“The Big Read Committee is grateful for the outpouring of community support in April 2013 from innovative partners, schools and more than 4,944 children, teens and adults who participated in our Big Read events celebrating Edgar Allan Poe,” said library Planning and Development Librarian Gay Wilson. “We look forward to dreaming big and working hard to make next year’s Big Read even bigger and better.”

The library’s 2014 Big Read will feature Jack London’s classic “The Call of the Wild,” for which the Friends of the Library has pledged a $6,000 matching grant.
