Learn About Natural World or Starting a Business at Upcoming Library Programs

June 7, 2013 — The natural world – especially the underground – is a theme running through this year’s Summer Reading Program. Kids are meeting critters that live below, teens have movies like “Holes” and adults can learn homesteading skills.

You can’t cover the underground without talking about Riverbluff Cave near Springfield, considered the oldest known ice age fossil cave in North America. The cave is closed to tours, but all ages can check out cave artifacts and learn more at an event at 6:30-10:30 p.m. Friday, June 14, at the Missouri Institute of Natural Science, 2327 W. Farm Road 190. When it’s dark, explore the sky through telescopes with members of the Springfield Astronomical Society.

We’re bringing the cave closer to you, too. In June through August, the Library Station will display Riverbluff Cave specimens from the Missouri Institute of Natural Science. Also through June, the Park Central Branch Library will feature an exhibit, “Beneath the Surface: Photos of Riverbluff Cave.”

Just a reminder about two series starting this week:

  • “Lessons in Physics for the Rest of Us” kicks off Monday, June 10, with Ted Keller presenting Weather Around the World at 7 p.m. for all ages in the Library Center auditorium. Tuesday is Environment: Earth for grades 6-12 in meeting room A. We’ll make our own mini-terrariums and more; materials provided. More programs follow this week and through June 26.

The series coincides with a Library Center exhibit “Here. There. Everywhere.” through June, made possible through NASA. See the full schedule in Bookends, or at thelibrary.org/programs. You can also call 882-0714.

  • “Simple Steps to Starting Your Business” is a free workshop series starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday (JUNE 11) at the Library Center. It’s sponsored by SCORE and underwritten by Commerce Bank. The comprehensive, five sessions continue June 18, 25; July 2 and 9 in the Library Center auditorium. Register at 882-0714.

It’s an opportunity to hear the how-tos from business professionals, like buying a franchise, home-based or online ventures, taxes and more. Attendees will also be able to receive mentoring from a trained SCORE volunteer if they choose.
