Mark Your Calendar: Friends of the Library Cookbook Sale Aug. 9-10 at Library Center; Brentwood Block Party Aug. 11 at Brentwood Branch Library

August 2, 2013 — Normally you have to wait until October to scoop up bargain-priced cookbooks at the Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale. But a donation of more than 2,000 cookbooks gave the Friends a good reason to plan a bonus sale.

(They were also unsure how to squeeze the huge donation into the truckloads being prepped for the Oct. 22-27 fall sale.)

On Friday and Saturday only, Aug. 9-10, the Friends Cookbook Sale will be open in the Library Center auditorium, 4653 S. Campbell Ave. The collection and hundreds more donated books will be $1, $3 and individually priced.

Hours are 1-8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday.

The sale is possible through the donation of a private collection owned by Friends of the Library member, the late Mary Snider. As a thank you, the Friends will donate the sale proceeds to the Brentwood Branch Library renovation campaign in Mary Snider’s name.

The annual Brentwood Branch Block Party is planned for 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11, on the library parking lot, 2214 Brentwood Blvd. Enjoy live music by Acoustic Essays and Modern Epic and tour the Mobile Library; kids will have crafts, games and the moon bounce. You can also see the architects’ plans for the Brentwood Branch renovation project.

More than a family event, it’s a reunion of old friends. The branch opened 42 years ago, and many of the patrons who moved away still call it their “home library.” Records show that people living in 12 zip codes use the Brentwood Branch!

What is it about this neighborhood library that engenders such loyalty?

Carol Purvis wrote: “It is such a pleasure and honor to go to a public place and have those who work there seem eager and glad to serve you. This has very much been our family's experience at Brentwood... Even if we didn't have the pleasure of taking a new batch of books home with us, just the experience of interacting with the staff and being served by them would make our day much better.”

And Jason Strait, 12, told us: “I come to the Brentwood every day. The staff are nice and the computers are fast. I really like the selection of books and movies. I feel safe when I'm here…”
