Resolving to Improve Your Life in 2014? Begin at the Library

December 27, 2013 —  If you’re resolving to improve your life in 2014, we invite you to begin at the library. We’ve got intelligent resources to help you stretch your dollars this year. We’ve got DVDs to put you on a new fitness track, and music to enjoy while you work out. The Funding and Business Information Center at the Library Center has resources if you’re pursuing a new business idea. Here’s a sample of what the library’s got for the new you.

Find distant relatives. The Library Center’s Local History & Genealogy Department has resources and knowledgeable staff to help you begin your search. The library also provides access to top genealogy research sites. Visit thelibrary.org/research and click “Genealogy.

Learn to use your gadgets. Drop by the Digital Device Open House from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 13 in the Library Station Frisco Room. Staff will provide one-on-one help with smartphones and downloading library e-books and e-audiobooks, and demonstrate new devices. A second Digital Device Open House is 1-4 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Library Center.

For digital camera/photography help, try the Introduction to Digital Photos class or training videos at the Edge Community Technology Center in the Midtown Carnegie Branch. For details call 837-5011, or visit thelibrary.org/edge.

Learn a new language. Mango Languages, at thelibrary.org/mango, is a fun and interactive way to learn a foreign language. Planning a trip overseas in 2014?This online system teaches practical conversation skills. 

            Upgrade your career. Check out our books and online resources at thelibrary.org/research, then “Find a Job.” Learn new computer and software skills to upgrade your career at The Edge Community Technology Center.   

             Make the (top) grade. The library has the resources you need to succeed in school, no matter how old you are. Besides books, the “online library” is open 24/7. Start your search at thelibrary.org/research, thelibrary.org/kids, and thelibrary.org/teens.  

Clear your tab. Overdue fines bogging you down? Start 2014 with a clean tab and a clear conscience. From Jan. 26-Feb. 1, we’ll drop 50 cents from your overdue fines balance for every item of nonperishable food you donate at any branch. All the food will go to Ozarks Food Harvest.
