Friends of the Library Book Sale Offers More Than Books

April 24, 2014 — Where can you find children’s pop-up books, collectible series, vinyl records, DVDs, CDs, westerns, travel books, Christian fiction, health guides, mysteries and nearly every hobby and cuisine guide there is, for a fraction of their retail cost?

The Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale, of course. It begins Tuesday, April 29, and runs through May 4 at the spacious Remington’s, 1655 W. Republic Road.

The Friends have again filled nearly four tractor-trailers with items donated by private individuals and weeded from the library’s older collections. The sale also features games and puzzles for kids and families.

Hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday through May 2; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. May 3 – Half-price Day; and 1-5 p.m. May 4, Bag Day. That’s when everything you can jam in a bag costs only $1, or $5 from the “better books” side.

Adult, young adult, children’s books and most audiovisual are $1 or less; better books are $2 and up. The Friends can accept only cash or checks.

Want first crack at the sale? The Friends Night Preview Sale, 5-8 p.m. Monday April 28, is for Friends members; or pay $5 at the door.

New this year: Organizers have streamlined and consolidated the pricing and checkout system. Sale staff wearing blue aprons will be available in each book section to answer questions and help shoppers find what they need.

They’ve also added more categories in children’s better books, and will sell a large collection of books on cassette. The Library discontinued that collection due to low use. If you still have a cassette tape player, it could be a gold mine.

Keep up with details about the sale by following the Friends on Facebook at Friends of the Springfield-Greene County Library District.

Former Navy SEAL Cade Courtley will be visiting veterans at a special lunch program today, April 24, in Springfield, but everyone can hear Courtley talk about his experiences at 7 p.m. at the Springfield Art Museum, 1111 E. Brookside Drive. The event is free and open to all ages.

His visit is part of the library’s April Big Read homage to the book, “The Call of the Wild.”
