Friends of the Library Book Sale Continues Through May 4 at Remington's; Drive-up Service Hours Expand on Sundays; Updates Coming to Park Central Branch and Library Center

May 1, 2014 — Have you made it to the big Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale yet at Remington’s? There are four more days left to get in on a bushel of bargain-priced books to keep you entertained through summer reading. (They make great gifts, too!)

The sale continues 10 a.m.-8 p.m. today and Friday, May 1-2; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Half-price Day; and 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Bag Day -- $1 a bag or $5 from better books. Remington’s is at 1655 W. Republic Road.

It’s also a perfect time to stock up on books for the tiny tots, kids, teens and adults in your family because the Library’s annual Summer Reading Program kicks off May 24 for all ages.

Drive-up window service is a popular convenience at many of the library branches, especially on Sundays when only the Library Center and Library Station are open from 1-5 p.m.

For your convenience beginning Sunday, May 4 we’re extending drive-up window service by an hour, staffing it from noon to 5 p.m. Both library branch buildings will still be open 1-5 p.m. on Sundays.

Pardon our progress this spring as we update some of our buildings.

At the Park Central Branch, we’re modifying the 6-year-old library following the principles of crime prevention through environmental design, or CPTED. Springfield police advised us on changes we could make to create a brighter, safer environment. The large reading “nooks” have been removed, replaced by tables and chairs. The long public computer bar will remain but be moved perpendicular to where it is now, a checkout desk will be installed at the front and brighter paint and new doors will be added to the restrooms.

At the Library Center beginning Monday, May 5 through May 21, workers will renovate the women’s restroom in the concourse. During that period, women will use the men’s restroom and men will be directed to a restroom in the Local History & Genealogy Department. A bigger project beginning late May will replace the front canopy, which will require patrons to enter the building through alternate entrances. When the time comes, we’ll help you through it.
