Library's Fall Schedule Packed with Fun and Informative Programs

August 28, 2014 — School is back in session, Labor Day is upon us and the Springfield-Greene County Library District is in full fall mode. The coming weeks offer a series on bullying prevention; the freedom to read during Banned Books Week; the Civil War in 1864; and World Space Week. And then there’s the huge Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale Oct. 21-26.

They’re all listed in the new Bookends catalog of library programs available now at every library branch and online at thelibrary.org/bookends. You can also follow the latest news about the entire district on one Facebook page beginning Sept. 2 at facebook.com/thelibrary.org.

Planning your personal calendar? Make room for these entertaining and thought-provoking programs this fall. Some highlights:

The perennial favorite Geezerfest, with the not-so-old-guys band Geezer, performs at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 on the Library Center patio.

We’ll honor some of the world’s great – and once banned – literature with adult storytimes, teen trivia and a live performance during the Free to Read Fest at several branches Sept. 23-27.

Bullying Prevention Month in October includes an evening with Tina Meier in person on Oct. 27 at the Brentwood Branch; with a simulcast at the Library Center, Library Station and Midtown Carnegie Branch. Meier’s daughter Megan committed suicide after being bullied online.

Civil War enthusiasts will enjoy “Campaigns & Politics: The Civil War in 1864” Oct. 8-28, with a return visit from scholar Fritz Klein as Abraham Lincoln on Oct. 14 at the Springfield Art Museum.

We’ll kick off World Space Week Oct. 3 with a “Passport to Space” Geocache Adventure for all ages and families. Passports will be available at all the branches through October.

Clubs that took a break over the summer will be looking for meeting rooms and speakers. Look to the library for a room – there’s never a fee – or to book a speaker. Call your library branch for details.

Just a reminder: All library branches will be closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday.
