Nora Caplan “Noni’s Little Problem” Reading and Book Signing Sept. 13 at Library Center
September 3, 2014 —
Former Springfield resident Nora Hickman Caplan, who graduated from Greenwood High School and Southwest Missouri State University, will visit her hometown on Saturday, Sept. 13, to talk about her first children’s book, “Noni’s Little Problem.” Nora will talk about the book and her niece Sally will read an excerpt from 10:30-11 a.m. in Library Center meeting room A. Nora will sell and sign copies of “Noni’s Little Problem” from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Library Center concourse.
Set in 1930s Springfield, “Noni’s Little Problem” is relatable and relevant to the challenges facing contemporary middle-grade readers. Nine-year-old Noni experiences pain and ridicule as she copes with two very present-day challenges—childhood obesity and bullying. With kindness and ingenuity, Noni overcomes Marvin’s bullying intimidation and, by using her writing skills, she gains the respect of her tormentor.
Nora’s short stories have appeared in The Saturday Evening Post, Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine (including one televised episode), and her features have appeared in the Washington Post newspaper. She currently writes a monthly editorial column for The Town Courier in Montgomery County, Md.
