Celebrate World Space Week at the Library
September 9, 2014 —
World Space Week, an international celebration of science and technology, is held annually Oct. 4-10. These dates commemorate the Oct. 4, 1957, launch of Sputnik 1, and the Oct. 10, 1967, signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. The weeklong event is coordinated by the United Nations with support from the World Space Week Association. Take part in this year’s celebration with programs at the Library.
Skype with an Astronaut
Friday, Oct. 3, 3 p.m. for all ages in the Library Center auditorium. Have you or someone you know ever wanted to ask a real astronaut what it’s like in space? You can, with astronaut and U.S. Air Force Col. Michael Hopkins. He’s a Lebanon/Richland native who served on the International Space Station with two Russian cosmonauts for 166 days. He returned to Earth on March 10, 2014.
"Passport to Space" Geocache Adventure
Oct. 3-10 for all ages & families. Stop by any Library branch to pick up your "Passport to Space." Then use your smartphone or GPS to locate space-themed geocaches at the Library branches and other locations. Caches will be available through October.
Guiding Your Way Kickoff
Saturday, Oct. 4, 1-5 p.m. for all ages & families in the Library Center auditorium. Learn about NASA’s Citizen Science projects and help us create an enormous LEGO brick space city.
Astrophotography 101
Tuesday, Oct. 7, 6:30 p.m. for all ages & families in the Library Center Story Hour Room. Experts with the Springfield Astronomical Society will tell you how to take great pictures of the night sky.
