Join the Library's Teen Book Reviewers -- The GreeneTeens

November 26, 2014 — Springfield and Greene County teens have an opportunity to read some of the best young adult books before anyone else by participating in the GreeneTeens review board

GreeneTeens began in 2012 as a way for area teens to recommend the best reads to their peers locally and nationally. The Springfield-Greene County Library District was chosen by the Young Adult Library Services Association, YALSA, to organize one of 16 Teens’ Top Ten Galley Groups in the nation.

The group receives advanced reader copies of books, or “galley copies,” from publishers to provide feedback about the books before publication. GreeneTeens reviewers also nominate titles to the national Galley Group Advisory Board, which compiles a short list of the nominations it receives from all 16 groups. Teens across the nation vote for their favorite titles, and the 10 titles receiving the most votes become the coveted Teens’ Top Ten list announced by YALSA each October during Teen Read Week.

To become a member of GreeneTeens:
• Youths in grades 6 through 12 submit an application, which must include a recommendation from a librarian or teacher.
• GreeneTeens members commit to reading and reviewing three titles every six months. You can find GreeneTeens reviews on the GreeneTeens blog: www.greeneteensbooks.blogspot.com.

Fair Grove teen Bryce Bettis loves getting to read books before they are published, especially series. “When you’re reading a series and you can’t wait until the next book, and then see it’s available through GreeneTeens, it’s like, ‘Yay’!”

Jacob Davis, of Republic High School, loves GreeneTeens because it saves him money – “Books are expensive!” – and it’s a fun and easy way to participate in the Library. An added benefit, he says: Not having to wait for a book you want to read.

Avid reader Merry Barnet, of Willard High School, speeds through books and agrees that GreeneTeens is a fantastic way to get books. Merry gave a rating of 5 (“Hard to imagine a better book”) to Anna Banks’ tale, “Of Triton,” calling it “Awesome.” She stayed up all night reading it and was pleased to get the sequel through GreeneTeens.
