Ed Fillmer Presents "Strangely Named Towns of the Ozarks" May 13; Passport Service Begins at Library Station in June; Summer Reading Programs Start May 16

Freelance videographer Ed Fillmer continues his popular video series about Ozarks culture and curiosities with a compilation he calls “Strangely Named Towns of the Ozarks” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, in the upstairs meeting room of the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library.
If you’ve seen his other library presentations, you know he peppers his video stories with extra insights. This is his last in the spring series, but he’s promised to resume a new series this fall.
Fillmer's "KY3's Ozark Life" video stories originally aired during his 17 years as a reporter, photographer and producer at KYTV. He is Journalist in Residence for the History Museum on the Square in cooperation with KYTV. For details call 862-0135.

People who live or work in north Springfield soon will have another option for applying for a U.S. passport. The Library Station, 2535 N. Kansas Expressway, has been approved as a passport acceptance facility by the U.S. Department of State. Services could begin there in June.
The Library Center at 4653 S. Campbell Ave. began accepting passport applications on June 9, 2014. Since then, staff has processed more than 2,700 passport applications and taken more than 1,770 passport photos.
The libraries offer convenient hours and seven-day-a-week passport service for busy families, working people and students. Library Center passport service hours are 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Library Station hours will be structured similarly. For more details, visit thelibrary.org/passport.

A Springfield school principal recently joined Youth Services associate Michelle Ballard’s Chat & Chew visit with a class because she’d heard an at-risk student who rarely speaks up was participating in Michelle’s visits.
That’s not the first time it’s happened at the schools and outreach sites, Michelle says. “I think it’s the power of books and how they speak to different people.”
The Summer Reading Program holds that power when the school year ends.
