"Be a Hunger Hero" May 16-Aug. 7 and Earn Chances to Win Great Prizes

May 21, 2015 — Children and families rely on Ozarks Food Harvest to help them put food on the table in the summer, when children don’t have access to free or reduced meals at school. That’s why the Food Bank sponsors several food programs through the summer at 15 sites in nine counties. But not everyone can take advantage of those programs.

Over at the Library, that gave us an idea. The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program is “Every Hero Has a Story.” Working with Ozarks Food Harvest, we decided to invite everyone to help the Food Bank through our “Be a Hunger Hero” food drive May 16-Aug. 7.

Here’s how it works: Each time you donate two non-perishable food items or hygiene items at any of the 10 library branches, you can enter your name in a drawing for a chance to win one of 100 prizes including a Kindle Fire HD6, all donated by Springfield-area businesses to Ozarks Food Harvest. Any age can participate. One entry per two items donated, and there is no limit to how much you can donate.

On June 30 and July 31, each library branch will draw five entries and contact the winners to collect their prizes. Then all entries will be combined for a grand prize drawing on Friday, Aug. 7, for a Kindle Fire HD6.

The monthly prizes include gift cards from Andy’s Frozen Custard, Incredible Pizza, Jumpin’ Joey’s, Dickerson Park Zoo, Andy B’s, Skateland, Krispy Kreme, Starplex Cinemas, Sky Zone, Glo Golf, Lighthouse Lanes and Dancing Mule Coffee Company.

Ozarks Food Harvest can use most nonperishable foods, especially these items: tuna or other canned meat, peanut butter, beans (dried or canned), nuts (or other food items rich in protein), soups and stews, boxed meals (macaroni and cheese, Hamburger Helper, potato dinners, pasta salads), rice and pasta, spaghetti sauce, canned (glass containers not accepted), canned vegetables and fruit, and cereal.

For more information about the food drive, call the library at 417-616-0564 or Ozarks Food Harvest, 417-865-3411.
