Library's Summer Schedule Packed with Fun and Informative Events

June 18, 2015 — You’re not imagining it – the libraries are busier than ever these days. It could be the 44 pages of activities that fill the summer edition of Bookends, the library district’s calendar of events. It’s available at every library branch, or at thelibrary.org/programs.

The next week, alone, offers a wide variety of programs for everything from the Shakespeare lover to live music fans. Here’s what’s coming up:

Catch a Shakespearean Evening with David Smith at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 18, in the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library upstairs meeting room. Experience a theatrical performance as Dave Smith, acting coach, director and performer for more than 30 years, reprises roles from some of William Shakespeare’s plays including “King Lear” and “Othello.” Between performances, Smith will invite the audience to participate in games and acting exercises that will shed light on Shakespearean texts.

Also on June 18 at 7 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium, award-winning freelance journalist Ed Fillmer returns with a new video composite of his “KY3’s Ozark Life” stories focusing on Explorers of the Ozarks. He will feature local heroes and their pursuits including archeologist Uris Zarins; the Ozarks’ first astronaut Tom Aley; and the late Maynard Cohik. Fillmer is Journalist in Residence for the History Museum on the Square in cooperation with KYTV.

Juneteenth is the oldest-known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865. All ages are invited to celebrate Juneteenth from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, June 20, on the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library parking lot.
The Springfield NAACP and the library will spotlight diversity in the community with community booths, storytelling and children’s book giveaways, crafts, snacks and live music. For details call 862-0135. Learn more about the history in “Juneteenth” by Denise M. Jordan; or “Come Juneteenth,” a fiction title for young readers by Ann Rinaldi.

Also at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at the Republic Branch Library, Patrick Mureithi shares his original songs on the guitar and ukulele in a family concert. Sponsored by Friends of the Library. Call 732-7284.
