Got Questions about the Brentwood Branch Renovation? We've Got Answers!

September 17, 2015 — The final phase of the $2.5 million capital campaign to renovate the Brentwood Branch got underway Sunday, Sept. 20. As the architects continue working on the plans, here is a handy FAQ about the branch, the project and what it will look like in the end.

 Brentwood History

The Brentwood Branch Library opened its doors in April 1971, three months before the formal merger of the Springfield-Greene County Library District.
The branch underwent a facelift/renovation in 1994.

Campaign Facts
• The campaign goal is to raise $2.5 million for the major renovation. The Friends of the Library has already pledged a three-year, $300,000 gift. We have also received additional money through private gifts and pledges by Library staff.
• The “leadership campaign” launched in August 2013 to attract major grants and donors. The final phase kicks off Sunday, Sept. 20, with a Brentwood block party.
• Campaign chairs Brooke O’Reilly and Stephanie Stenger Montgomery are leading the steering committee of citizens, under the direction of The Library Foundation and Director Valerie Richardson.
• The branch is expected to close in late April; construction is scheduled to begin in May. Tentative plan is to provide limited service for materials holds pick up and returns at a site to be determined. Brentwood patrons are also encouraged to use other branches – Library Center, Library Station, Midtown Carnegie Branch, Park Central branch, or one of the county branches if that is closer to home.

Why Renovate Now?
It’s time. The Brentwood Branch was built in 1971 and underwent a partial renovation/expansion in 1994. It has the original, 1971 boiler that requires frequent repairs. It’s compact and efficient, but crowded and lacks the technology and space that patrons say they want and need.

What Will We Get in the Renovation?
• It will preserve the “neighborhood flavor” of the Brentwood Branch that patrons and staff say they love so much. About 1,500 square feet will be added. The renovation will also make better use of existing space.
• The design is by Dake Wells Architecture, a local firm that is working in consultation with a Lawrence, Kan., firm Clark Heusemann, which specializes in public library design.
• A drive-up service window for drop-offs and checkouts
• More customer parking, and an easier entry and exit driveway
• Several small-group meeting rooms
• A 1,500-square-foot expansion that will enlarge the reading area and spaces on the west side of the building
• An energy–efficient heating and air conditioning system
• An enlarged and secure children’s area
• A distinct teen/young adult area
• A quiet, dedicated public computer area
• A design that meets top standards for water and energy conservation, environmentally safe materials, with LEED certification. That verifies a project meets certain, top standards for environmentally friendly buildings.
• Staff parking will be moved to a new parking area on the east side of the building.

Why Will it Cost $2.5 Million?
• This is a major interior renovation, which will gut the building in order to rewire and retool for a new HVAC system and open ceilings – one of the more hidden and expensive aspects of the project. Exterior work includes installing a drive-through lane and service window, addition of 1,500 square feet and reworked interior.
