Friends of the Library Will Hold Spring Book Sale at Fairgrounds E-Plex; Marideth Sisco Talks About New Book Dec. 5 at Library Center

November 19, 2015 — And you thought the Fall Book Sale was big?

The Friends of the Library are moving up, in a sense, for the 2016 Spring Book Sale: from the 20,000-square-foot Remington’s to a whopping 37,000 square feet in the E-Plex west wing at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds.

They’re relocating for the April 26-May 1 spring sale because Remington’s owner, Ridgecrest Baptist Church, said it will not host any public events in 2016. The church has not decided what to do with the property.

The Friends are grateful to find an even larger space for the popular sales, which attract individuals and book dealers from the four-state area – and often beyond.

Can they fill 37,000 square feet?

“Oh, you bet,” Friends President Jim Moore says confidently. Not only will the extra space allow the Friends to avoid storing books in boxes beneath the sale tables, but they’ll be able to create wider aisles between all those tables. “It’s actually going to be a bigger and better situation than we had before,” Moore adds.

There are some drawbacks, but the Friends are hopeful they can adjust. The sale dates are the same as planned – April 26-May 1, but the Friends Preview Sale, which normally occurs the Monday before the “public” sale, will be on Tuesday, April 26, instead. That means one less full day for the sale, but the Half-Price and Bag Day sales will still be the following Saturday and Sunday as usual.

The Friends will also need more volunteers for the setup. Planning your 2016 calendar? The Friends can use your help.

Save the date: Ozarks storyteller Marideth Sisco will talk about her new book, “Crosspatch: Cranky Musings on Gardening in Rocky Soil” at 2 p.m. Dec. 5 in the Library Center auditorium. She will also sell and sign her book.

The self-proclaimed “unrepentant gardener” has published a collection of her best gardening essays from the West Plains Quill and on public radio KSMU-FM under the title “These Ozarks Hills.”
