Author Steve Yates Returns with “Sandy and Wayne” Feb. 6

January 13, 2016 — Springfield native and author Steve Yates returns home to talk about his newest book, “Sandy and Wayne,” a novella, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, in the Library Center meeting room B. The event is free and open to the public. The Mississippi-based author will sell and sign his book after the reading.

“Sandy and Wayne,” published in paperback by Dock Street Press, is a love story set in the rugged, crumbling shale of the Boston Mountains in Arkansas. Sandy Coker is the lead inspector for the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department. Wayne Sheridan is the dirt foreman on the biggest heavy construction job Sandy has ever supervised. Steve Yates tells the story of two lost hearts, their harbored ambitions, and the secret that threatens to tear them apart.

Yates writes from experience. While earning his graduate degree in Fayetteville, Ark., he worked three summers with the Arkansas Highway & Transportation Department on survey and construction inspection crews dispatched from Springdale, Ark., to the interstate projects then underway in the Boston Mountains.

In August 2013, New York Times best-selling novelist and short story writer Lauren Groff chose the novella “Sandy and Wayne” as the inaugural winner of Big Fiction Magazine’s Knickerbocker Prize. “Sandy and Wayne” was also a finalist for the Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society William Faulkner / Wisdom Award for the Best Novella.

Yates has won national recognition for three other books, “Some Kinds of Love: Stories,” “Morkan’s Quarry” and “The Teeth of the Souls.”

Yates is assistant director/marketing director at University Press of Mississippi in Jackson, and lives in Flowood, Miss., with his wife Tammy.
