Friends of the Library Spring Sale Hits $135,958.23 in New Venue

May 2, 2016 — The Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale hit $135,958.23 in sales last week, despite being open one day less than in past years, and in a new location – the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds E*Plex.

The sales total for the Friends Preview Night on Tuesday, April 26, and the regular sale Wednesday-Sunday, April 27-May 1, was the second-highest in the history of the Friends sales. The record was set in the fall 2015 sale, with $147,377.21.

Friends President Jim Moore said the new location, with more shopping space, worked in their favor despite the shorter sale. Shoppers said they liked the wider aisles, more space to display all the books on tables instead of storing some in boxes on the floor, and the central checkout area.

The spring sale also broke other records: the Friends Night Preview Sale topped the last record by $200; and Saturday, the traditional Half-Price Day, brought in $4,000 more than the previous sales record, Moore said. They came within $100 of setting a sales record on Sunday, Bag Day, when everything stuffed in a bag is $1, or $5 from the “better books” side.

“We were in a new location, one day shorter, and took in the second-highest we’ve ever taken in,” Moore said. Remington’s, the traditional location, closed in 2015.

Moore added, “We’re just so happy with the community support for the program, and we’re looking forward to the next sale October 26-30 at the E*Plex.” He also thanked the hundreds of Friends and community volunteers who made the sale possible.

Nearly all the books and other items on the better books side of the room were gone when the sale ended at 5 p.m. Sunday. The remaining books on the $1, or value, side are being recycled.

Proceeds from the spring and fall book sales benefit the Springfield-Greene County Libraries in the form of capital improvements, equipment, Summer Reading Program performers, free concerts, author talks and free books for preschoolers.
