Experience "A Voyage from England" with Friends of the Library June 11; Between Friends Gift Shops' Sidewalk Sale June 22

June 9, 2016 — Journal title page: A Voyage from England to the United States of America April & May 1828 by John Salmon...LondonIf you missed the readers’ theater in March that portrayed one Englishman’s transatlantic journey, it’s scheduled again at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, in the Library Center auditorium.

The Friends of the Library will repeat their performance of “A Voyage from England,” which drew a standing-room-only crowd in March. The Friends discovered the handwritten diary of John Salmon among donated books in 2015, and pieced together his story.

Salmon sailed from Portsmouth, England, to New York City from April 19 to May 16, 1828 aboard the American barque sailing ship Chelsea. He was a religious man and a keen observer, describing the ship, “beautifully triumphant on old Oceans bosom, though with considerable heaving by the dashing billows…”

He described the hazards: “Our fears of Ice blocks was indeed realised during the night . . . as a mountain of Ice was seen passing us, 50 feet high & a small one actually struck the Vessel.”

Steerage was crowded with nearly 150 men, women and children, and he witnessed tragedy: “…at 7 committed to the deep the remains of the little child that died yesterday . . . I read part of the burial service & at the proper time gave the signal, when the plank being raised, the body was plunged into the deep abyss. . . sewn up in canvas.”

The Friends say they get chills every time they perform his words.
