Brush Up On and Learn New Skills with Lynda.com

July 7, 2016 — You don’t have to be digitally challenged to be confounded at times by the move to Windows 10 on your computer or an upgrade on your cell phone.

Springfield resident Wayne Hutchins mastered his computer and digital upgrades with an online service the Library offers with your library card – Lynda.com. Find it at thelibrary.org/lynda.

It’s an online training service – consider it a video library – that helps you learn skills in business, software, technology and the creative arts for personal or professional goals. There are some 3,000 courses and 150,000 online tutorials linked from the landing page. Classes are taught by professionals and run one to two hours. You can complete each course at your own pace, and stop and start when you need to.

City of Springfield employees have used Lynda.com to learn new graphic design skills and software upgrades.

Wayne Hutchins learned about Lynda.com from the Library and gave it a try, and then wrote:

“This note is to tell you how much I appreciate being able to use Lynda.com through the library’s account… The lessons on Windows 10, Samsung S7 Edge smart phone and many other topics have helped me very much.”

He added, “… The teacher has been so prepared and you can stop the videos any time and try his suggestion on your own device. It has helped me very much with Windows 10 and am learning many new things about my new Samsung smart phone.”

Another advantage, he said: being able to learn on your own schedule. It’s available 24/7.

As a mom of five children, Megan Sundlie agrees. While preparing for a new job around her family’s schedule, Megan took classes at home on Lynda.com. “That was excellent for someone like me because I could take classes at 10:30 at night if I needed to.”

Summer might be the perfect time for students, travelers and job seekers to brush up on or learn new skills. For others, it may just be time to make peace with Windows 10.
