Registration Underway for Music & Lyrics Workshop Sept. 24

August 15, 2016 —    Get the inspiration you need to launch your songwriting career, or perfect your skills, at the Music & Lyrics Workshop from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell Ave. For age 14-adult.

     Featured guest presenter Tom Sharpe, drummer for Grammy Award winner Mannheim Steamroller, and area musicians will provide a day of entertaining and educational breakout sessions. All sessions are tailored to composers and performers of all skill levels and musical genres. The event is sponsored by The Library Foundation.

     Registration is $75 and seating is limited. Lunch will be provided. Download the registration form at yourlibraryfoundation.org or at any library branch. Registration deadline is 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Library Foundation.

     Here’s the lineup for the Music & Lyrics Workshop Saturday, Sept. 24.
10 a.m. Sign-in and vendor tables, in the concourse.
10:30 a.m. Welcome, in the auditorium.
10:45 a.m. 3 Guitars to Tell My Story, Dave Painter, auditorium. Dave will share personal stories and talk about how he progressed from playing acoustic guitars, to electric, then classical; he'll demonstrate each style and talk about how he blends all three.
11:45 a.m. DIY Music, with Three Fine Lines – Jason, Justin and Kevin Kearby, auditorium. A vibrant DIY music and art scene is an important part of any community's culture. Come learn how Thee Fine Lines do it. They will play some of their songs, talk about creating and managing touring and recording, to running an independent record label and pressing records.
12:30-1 p.m. Lunch, provided in meeting rooms A&B
1-1:45 p.m. Lyric Writing, Jody Bilyeu, Story Hour Room.
1-1:45 p.m. Thumbpicking Guitar: Experiences in Performing, Competing, and Songwriting, Shannon Stine, meeting rooms A&B. Shannon will share her experiences learning the thumbpicking style, competing in national thumbpicking competitions, and incorporating it into her songwriting.
2-2:45 p.m. Lyric Writing, Jody Bilyeu, Story Hour Room.
2-2:45 p.m. Thumbpicking Guitar: Experiences in Performing, Competing, and Songwriting, Shannon Stine, meeting rooms A&B. Shannon will share her experiences learning the thumbpicking style, competing in national thumbpicking competitions, and incorporating it into her songwriting.
3-3:45 p.m. Songwriting: From Creation to Final Product, Chris Albert, auditorium. Chris will take us through the steps of crafting an original piece from start to finish. He'll cover copyrighting, publishing, dos and don'ts of record production, and the issue of piracy in the recording business.
3:45-5:30 p.m. Master Class with Tom Sharpe, auditorium. From Mannheim Steamroller, Tom will give a “behind the music” demonstration of various musical techniques, polyrhythms and coordination used to create his unique sound, and discuss his life as a touring performing artist. Tom is also principal performer and artistic director of the Sharpe World Music Ensemble.
Come back on Sunday, Sept. 25, in the Library Center auditorium for a free, all ages concert from 2-4 p.m. with Tom Sharpe, drummer for Mannheim Steamroller.
