Contract Bridge, Homeless Youth, Local History and New Book Buzz: Learn All About Them Sept. 1-8 at the Library

September 1, 2016 — Science suggests we can help keep our brains sharp as we age by taking on challenging tasks and maintaining an active social life. Learning to play contract bridge is one way to do both, says Carol Rose Gee, and she’s saving a seat for you at a free series of four lessons.

Gee is with the Southwest Missouri Bridge Club, which is offering Introduction to Contract Bridge for adults from 6:30-8:30 p.m. beginning Thursday, Sept. 8, in the Library Center Story Hour Room. Sessions continue, same time, same place on Thursday, Sept. 15, 22 and 29. To register, call 882-0714.

On Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium, hear “Building the Ozarks and Route 66: A Biographical Sketch of John T. Woodruff. Tom Peters, dean of library services at Missouri State University, will recount Woodruff’s accomplishments.
Born in 1868, Woodruff’s vision laid the groundwork for the development of schools, colleges, a hospital and hotels. As the first president of the U.S. 66 Highway Association, he helped develop the Route 66 corridor to its iconic status.

On Friday, Sept. 2, from 7-9 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium, MSU students and faculty will present video, vocal music and dramatic readings on behalf of Springfield’s homeless youth.

"Throwaway Youth: Stories of Springfield's Homeless Teens," reflects Nancy Fairbanks’ book based on her interviews with teen clients of The Rare Breed Youth Outreach Center in Springfield.

The MSU Opera Workshop students will perform pieces from "Rent," "La Boheme" and "Les Miserables." MSU Theatre and Dance students will read selections from Fairbanks’ book, published by Moon City Press on behalf of the MSU Center for Community Engagement. Fairbanks will autograph copies of her book, with sales to benefit Rare Breed.
