Rock the Vote and Enjoy Three Free Concerts at the Library Center Sept. 9-11

September 8, 2016 — The Library Center will Rock the Vote this weekend, joining the nationwide campaign to register voters – especially newly minted 18-year-olds. We’re doing it with lots of music and help from the League of Women Voters, and capping it with our annual fall party – Geezerfest.

Rock the Vote encourages young people to register to vote and make their voices heard in elections. Anyone can register to vote at any of the 10 library branches all year, but the League will make a special push during Saturday’s events.

First is “Why Hamilton? Why Now?” with music from the hip hop musical at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, in the Library Center auditorium. A panel of educators and performers will then talk about why “Hamilton” is relevant today and why it resonates with so many people.

On Saturday, Sept. 10, beginning at 1 p.m. and throughout the day, the League of Women Voters members will be onsite to register voters and take voter “pledges” to go to the polls on Nov. 8.

The Rock part? The Nova Heat will perform a free concert from 1-3 p.m. Saturday on the patio (the auditorium if it rains). The band’s music reflects influences of Neil Young, RadioHead, Pink Floyd, Tom Waits, Nirvana and Foo Fighters.

From 7-9 Saturday, Geezer takes the stage on the Library Center patio. Geezerfest is a come-as-you-are free family concert that heralds autumn. (People have been known to dance, too.) Use our chairs or bring your lawn chairs, have a tailgate party or visit the Mudhouse.

The League of Women Voters will continue registering voters while Geezer members Richard Struckhoff, Mark Ellman, Mark Pasquale, Duane Lewis, Rusty Swift, Jana Henderson and David Sharon play favorite covers from the 60s to the 90s.

If bluegrass is more your style, come back at 2 p.m. Sunday to the Library Center auditorium for A Bluegrass Autumn with Phillip and the Flatheads. They'll throw in a few surprises while paying homage to the old masters.

All three concerts are sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
