Keeping Track of Want-To-Reads is Easy and Fun at COOLcat.org

September 4, 2009 — Like many of you, I am a habitual list maker. If I want or need to do it, pick it up or plan for it, it goes on a list. My most treasured list is the ever-growing list of book titles and authors I call the “Someday Reads” that I keep in a lovely, hand-crafted journal my husband made for me several years ago.

Even with my journal, I can’t seem to keep up on all the amazing books that I come across and would like to someday read. That’s where a nifty feature in COOLcat, the Library’s online catalog comes in.

“My Lists is a great feature if you’ve got lists of items you’re interested in or you’ve come across something in the catalog and think ‘I want to save that for later,’ but you don’t want to have a bunch of items filling your hold limit,” said Reference Librarian Janice Brandsma.

The My List function in COOLcat is an avid reader’s dream and if you haven’t already made it part of your My Account feature at coolcat.org, then take a second to gather all those little slips of paper you’ve been writing book titles on and follow along.

Perform a search of the catalog for a keyword, author or subject that interests you. From the search results page, select the title(s) that interest you via the small box on the left side of each entry, and click on the Add Selected To My Lists button. If you are not already logged into your account, you’ll be asked to do so.

Next you can either save the selected books to a previously created list or create a new one. Use the drop down menu to select Create A New List, click on Submit and type in a name and, if you wish, a description for your list. Click Submit again and your list has been created. It’s that easy. Access your list, or list of lists, at any time by logging into your library account at thelibrary.org or coolcat.org and selecting the link for My Lists.
