Several Authors Scheduled to Visit Springfield in 2017

January 12, 2017 — Cover image of "Lilly's Big Day" by Kevin Henkes. The new year is bringing lots of new services to library patrons, including a stellar lineup of authors. Here’s a quick preview.

Young readers know the loveable mice characters of Kevin Henkes’ picture books and beginning readers, including the No. 1 New York Times best-seller “Lilly’s Big Day.” Henkes, author and illustrator of 50 books, will speak at the Library Center on March 8.

The Library’s One Read in April focuses on themes and literature of World War I, including two special guests.

After the 2015 release of “Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear,” artist Sophie Blackall won the 2016 Caldecott Medal for her touching illustrations of the little bear and his soldier that went to World War I. Blackall will give a talk April 13.

Jacqueline Winspear is the author of the award-winning “Maisie Dobbs” mystery series set against the backdrop of World War I. Winspear will speak at the Library Center on April 20.

If you know the book or NetFlix adult series “Orange Is the New Black,” you are already familiar with author Piper Kerman. She brought her “crucible experience” to millions of readers in her 2010 memoir “Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Woman’s Prison.”

The Library Foundation will host Kerman at a ticketed event for adults on April 22 at the Springfield Art Museum. Tickets are $30 per person, or $75 to attend the talk and a VIP reception with Kerman. For details contact Foundation Director Valerie Richardson at 616-0586 or valerier@thelibrary.org.

Ozarkers today still ponder the legend of a farm north of Springfield inhabited by a family of albinos. Springfield native and Mississippi author Steve Yates has crafted the legend into what he calls “a horror story turned inside out.”

Yates will present two talks about his newest novel, “The Legend of the Albino Farm,"published by Unbridled Books, on April 23 at the Library Station and April 24 at the Library Center.
