"Orange is the New Black" Author Piper Kerman Speaks April 22

March 24, 2017 —      Don’t miss the Library Foundation’s special, ticketed event featuring Piper Kerman, author of best-selling memoir “Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison.”

Kerman will speak at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at the Springfield Art Museum, 1111 E. Brookside Drive. Tickets for this foundation fundraiser are $30.

Piper Kerman brought her “crucible experience” in a Federal Correctional Institution to millions of readers in her 2010 memoir; Netflix brought it to millions more in the critically acclaimed series of the same name. Due to the mature subject matter, parental discretion is advised. Her book will be available for purchase and signing after the event.

Tickets are available through Eventbrite; The Library Foundation website yourlibraryfoundation.org; the Springfield-Greene County Library Facebook page; and at the checkout desk of the Library Center, Library Station and Schweitzer Brentwood Branch Library. Cash, credit card or checks accepted, made to The Library Foundation, please specify VIP reception and presentation; or presentation only. For more details contact Foundation Director Valerie Richardson, 616-0586 or valerier@thelibrary.org; or call 882-0714.

Kerman spent 13 months in the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Conn. A brief dalliance with drug trafficking in her early 20s sent Kerman to prison 10 years later on money laundering charges.

In her compelling and often hilarious book, she explores the experience of incarceration and the intersection of her life with the lives of the women she met while in prison: their friendships and families, mental illnesses and substance abuse issues, cliques and codes of behavior.

The book also raises provocative questions about the state of criminal justice in America, and how incarceration affects the individual and communities throughout the nation.

Since her release, Kerman has worked tirelessly to promote the cause of prison and criminal justice reform. She works with nonprofits, philanthropies and other organizations working in the public interest, and serves on the board of directors of the Women’s Prison Association and the advisory boards of InsideOUT Writers and JustLeadershipUSA.

She has been called as a witness by the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights to testify on solitary confinement and women prisoners, and by the U.S. Senate Governmental Affairs and Homeland Security Committee to testify about the federal Bureau of Prisons.
