Sample Four Ozarks Preservation Efforts at May 13 Symposium

April 25, 2017 —      Learn about the efforts of area lovers of history and culture to preserve history and how you can contribute and participate in preserving the Ozarks history during the Historic Preservation Month Symposium.

Drop in for one session or all four from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in the upstairs meeting room of the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library, 397 E. Central St. For details call 862-0135.

     Here’s the schedule:

  •  9-10:15 a.m. Exploring Ozarks Alive. The Ozarks region is unlike anywhere else and Kaitlyn McConnell wants to tell the world about it through her website ozarksalive.com. Each week, she writes about a different place, person, business or piece of history that shows the area’s distinctive flavor. McConnell will discuss Ozarks Alive, what she’s trying to accomplish, and why it’s important to preserve these Ozarks stories before they simply become history.
  • 10:30-11:45 a.m. From the Darkroom & Over There. Join Library Digital Imaging Specialist Ben Divin as he discusses the newest Local History Department digitization projects, “From the Darkroom: Springfield’s Historic Newspaper Photographs” and “Over There: Missouri and the Great War.” Divin will give an overview of the projects, the process for gathering and scanning materials, and what the future holds.
  •  1-2:15 p.m. Cemetery Preservation in an Ozarks Community. In the late 1990s a section of the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery was destroyed by heavy equipment. One man, Ray Gene Richardson, restored and preserved the cemetery, ultimately winning the prestigious McReynolds Award for historic preservation from the Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation. Jami Lewis, archivist with the History Museum on the Square, will discuss Richardson's project along with preservation projects at the History Museum.
  •  2:30-4 p.m. Personal Archiving. Need to know what to do with all of your photographs, letters, scrapbooks and home movies?  Join archivists from the State Historical Society of Missouri's Springfield Research Center to look at how to preserve and maintain digital and physical content. Learn tips and tricks on how best to preserve your memories and information including photographs, documents, audiovisual materials and more.
