Library Essay Contest Asks: How Has the Library Helped You?

April 9, 2010 — The Library is a great place to save money, with free books, CDs, movies and entertainment. Programs help parents help their children to read, teach nonprofits how to write grants. But it’s also an essential service in these rough economic times, offering free Internet access and Wi-Fi, free computer skills and career training classes, and more.

In honor of National Library Week, April 11-17, the Springfield-Greene County Library District is sponsoring an essay contest, asking patrons to tell us in 500 words, “How the Library has helped me.” The contest is open to patrons age 18 and older, and essays may be submitted from April 11 through May 3.     

Three winners will be selected by Library staff in May, and will be among the first to be featured in a series of “READ” posters that will be displayed in the libraries. Winners will also receive a gift basket for book lovers. The Library will publicly announce the winners.

Essay contest rules

In 500 words or less, describe how the Library has helped you in a meaningful or significant way. Essays must be original work. Entries will be judged on creative expression and clarity.

1. Include your name, address, daytime phone number and e-mail address.
2. One entry per person age 18 or older may be submitted between April 11 and May 3 to any branch library or by e-mail to kathleeno@thelibrary.org.
3. By participating, each entrant accepts these rules and gives the Library the right to publish, edit and/or copy the entry and their photo for any and all purposes in any media including the Library Web site, thelibrary.org. For more details call 616-0566.
4. Employees of the Springfield-Greene County Library District and members of their immediate families are not eligible to win.
