CHECKING OUT AN EBOOK

If you are using a Kindle Fire you can complete the following steps through the browser on your device or using a computer. If you are using an E-Ink Kindle (black and white screen) you must complete the checkout and transfer process using a computer.

You can search for and download eBooks at our Overdrive catalog. Clicking on one of the collection links to the left (under eBook Fiction or eBook Nonfiction) will allow you to browse through different genres. You can also search by title or author (Creator) and then limit your search to a specific format (in this case, Kindle books). Checking the “Only Available Copies” box ensures all the search results are currently available. By clicking on “Advanced Search” you get additional search options, including the ability to limit by format, subject and only copies available. This is a handy feature if you are wanting to load up your device quickly with available mysteries, romances or etc.

EBooks that are available for checkout say “Add to cart.” EBooks that are unavailable say “Place a hold.”

  • Once you have found an eBook to checkout, click the “Add to cart” link, then click “Proceed to Checkout.”
  • Enter your library card number.
  • Choose the length of the lending period (7 or 14 days) and click “Confirm Checkout.”

TRANSFERRING EBOOKS TO A KINDLE WIRELESSLY

  • Click “Get for Kindle”
  • You will be taken to Amazon’s website. There is no charge for the library eBook, but Amazon will have a record of your checkout.
  • Click “Get library book” [yellow button on the right side of the screen]
  • Log into your Amazon account, if you are not already, or create an account.
  • Select the device to which you like the library eBook delivered. [If you only have one device registered, you will only be given that one choice.]
  • The library eBook should automatically appear in your library. [Make sure you are connected to a wifi network, Kindle library eBooks are not delivered through a 3G connection. If the eBook does not appear within a few minutes, go into your menu and select the sync option.]

Note: Library eBooks published by Penguin Group cannot be downloaded wirelessly to an E-Ink (black & white) Kindle. This is due to publisher policy. Please follow the instructions below for downloading and transferring them via USB. They can, however, be downloaded wirelessly to a Kindle Fire if you perform the above steps in your device's browser.

Note: If you are downloading a book to the Kindle app on a tablet or smartphone, it will appear in the archived items first. Go to your archive and tap on the book to complete the download.
