The Kindle Fire can now download e-books and e-audiobooks wirelessly using the OverDrive Media Console app. Select Quick Start Guide: Smartphone/Tablet for this procedure.
CHECKING OUT AN E-BOOK
If you are using a Kindle Fire you can complete the following steps through the browser on your device or using a computer. If you are using an E-Ink Kindle (black and white screen) you must complete the checkout and transfer process using a computer.
You can search for and download e-books at our Overdrive catalog. Clicking on the Menu button at the top right of the screen will bring up our different collections. Under the e-book collection, you can click on All Fiction or All Nonfiction or a variety of other genres. Once into a collection, you will be able to filter your browsing by format, subject, only copies available now and etc. Checking the “Show only titles with copies available” box ensures all the search results are currently available. This is a handy feature if you are wanting to load up your device quickly with available mysteries, romances or etc.
You can also conduct an advanced search by title or author (Creator) and then limit your search to a specific format (in this case, Kindle Books).
E-books that are available for checkout have a darkened open book icon in the right corner of the e-book cover. E-books that are unavailable have a grayed out open book icon.
Once you have found an e-book to checkout, click the cover of the item, then click “Borrow.”
Enter your library card number, if you’re not already signed in.
Click the “Download” button next to the e-book you would like to download, then choose Kindle Book and click “Confirm & Download.”
Another window will open taking you to the Amazon website. Click the yellow “Get Library Book” button on the right.
Sign into your Amazon account, if you’re not already.
If you only have one device registered to your Amazon account, the book will automatically be delivered to that device. The e-book will automatically download the next time your device connects to Wi-Fi. If the device is already connected to Wi-Fi, the e-book should instantly be available on it.
If you have more than one device registered to your Amazon account, you will need to choose which device you’d like for the e-book to be delivered to. The e-book will automatically download the next time your device connects to Wi-Fi. If the device is already connected to Wi-Fi, the e-book should instantly be available on it.
Note: If you are downloading a book to the Kindle app on a tablet or smartphone, it will appear in the archived items first. Go to your archive and tap on the book to complete the download.
Note:If your browser does not ask you where to save a file you will need to change your browser's settings.
RETURN AN E-BOOK
To return an item early, visit the "Manage Your Kindle" page in your Amazon account. Find the book you would like to return, click on the "Actions..." button and select "Return this book." To permanently delete the item from your Amazon account, follow the same procedure and select "Delete from library."
