NOOK Simple Touch or Other E-Ink Readers
Applies to: Barnes & Noble NOOK, Sony Reader, Literati, Kobo Reader and other compatible e-readers (excluding Kindles and NOOK Tablet & Color).
The Barnes & Noble NOOK Color and Tablet can download e-books and audiobooks wirelessly using the OverDrive Media Console app. Select the Quick Start Guide: Smartphone/Tablet for this procedure.
Download and install Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your computer. Please make sure you have the most recent version of Adobe Digital Editions installed before continuing with this walkthrough.
To read e-books on your e-reader (or home computer), you must install the free software program Adobe Digital Editions on a personal computer. This program manages the e-books you borrow from the Library and lets you transfer them to an e-reader. On the ADE website, click Download Now under Next Steps to begin the process.
Create an Adobe ID and authorize your computer.
If you do decide to transfer your downloaded e-books to your e-reader, you must create a free Adobe ID and use it to authorize your computer. This can be done at any time by clicking on the Help menu and selecting “Authorize Computer…” or you will be prompted to do so the first time you download a library e-book. If you have not created an Adobe ID, click on the “Get an Adobe ID” link. Once you have created an Adobe ID, return to ADE and enter your email address and password in the authorization window.
CHECKING OUT AND DOWNLOADING AN E-BOOK
You can search for and download e-books at our Overdrive catalog. Clicking on the Menu button at the top right of the screen will bring up our different collections. Under the e-book collection, you can click on All Fiction or All Nonfiction or a variety of other genres. Once into a collection, you will be able to filter your browsing by format, subject, only copies available now and etc. Checking the “Show only titles with copies available” box ensures all the search results are currently available. This is a handy feature if you are wanting to load up your device quickly with available mysteries, romances or etc.
You can also conduct an advanced search by title or author (Creator) and then limit your search to a specific format (in this case, ePub e-book).
E-books that are available for checkout have a darkened open book icon in the right corner of the e-book cover. E-books that are unavailable have a grayed out open book icon.
Once you have found an e-book to checkout, click the cover of the item, then click “Borrow.”
Enter your library card number, if you’re not already signed in.
Click the “Download” button next to the e-book you would like to download, then choose ePub e-Book and click “Confirm & Download.”
In the pop-up window that appears, select “Open with: Adobe Digital Editions” or click the “Open” button.
Adobe Digital Editions will open on your computer and begin downloading the e-book.
TRANSFERRING E-BOOKS TO AN E-READER USING ADOBE DIGITAL EDITIONS
You must authorize Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), if you have not already done this, you will be prompted to do so at this point.
After downloading the e-book, plug your e-reader into your computer.
Click the Library button in ADE at the top left. Your e-reader should appear on the left-hand side under the Devices heading.
Click on the book to be transferred and drag it to your e-reader. You will see a green plus sign when it has successfully been transferred.
Disconnect your e-reader by safely ejecting it from your computer.
Follow the device instructions to locate and read the e-book.
Note: Library e-books may not show up in your device’s library. It may be useful to search other folders, such as My Stuff, My Digital Files or etc. if you cannot locate your library e-book. You may also want to check our e-books FAQ Research Guide for additional assistance.
RETURNING AN EBOOK
To return an item early you must use Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). Please follow the software’s procedures.
