Ancestry.com to Offer Free Access to 1940 U.S. Census

Ancestry.com announced via press release on August 17th that "both the images and indexes to the 1940 U.S. Federal Census will be made free to search, browse, and explore in the United States when this important collection commences streaming onto the website in mid-April 2012."

The 1940 census on Ancestry.com will consist of over 3.8 million images containing more than 130 million records. These records will be searchable by 45 fields including name, gender, and street address; and will be free until the end of 2013.

While you are awaiting the upcoming census release The National Archives website includes pages dedicated to the subject, including a counter which tells to the second the amount of time until the release and a list of the questions asked by the enumerators. A very helpful link allows input to determine, by street address, the enumeration districts of cities throughout the United States.

Your local Springfield-Greene County Library can help you with questions about the upcoming release of the 1940 U.S. Census.
