Pick Up Some New Skills this Summer at the Library

Summer might be the perfect time for you to pick up some computer skills you’ve been putting off during the year, and the Edge Community Technology Center has choices galore. The classes are free and are located in the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library, 397 E. Central St.

Students can learn everything from Windows 7 to basic email, Internet Explorer and basic typing (for English and Spanish speakers), photo editing and Web development skills. Edge instructors lead the main sessions; the self-guided instructional videos and software allow you to don a headset and go at your own pace at a computer.

Frances Fuerst, a recent Edge attendee, said she’s had a computer for many years, “but I’ve never been online. More and more you need to go online to get your bank statement, get forms and get your phone bill. I just know I’m at the point I need to get with the program.”

Donna Winn said the Missouri Career Center sent her to the Edge to review her skills in Quickbooks so she could get the job she wanted. “I don’t know what I would have done if it hadn’t been for these classes,” Donna said.

Paula Wells speaks for many of her classmates: “The whole world is going computerized. If I don’t learn it, I won’t know what my kids and grandkids are talking about!

Check out the courses in the Edge catalog, available at any library branch, or go to Don’t see what you need? Feel free to call 837-5011. A series of basic Edge Mobile Classes are also offered at eight library branches, also listed in the Edge catalog.

If you’ve waited until now to figure out the ins and outs of your e-reader, consider picking up some tips at one of these upcoming e-reader sessions.

The free classes will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (May 29) at the Brentwood Branch Library; 1 p.m. Friday (June 1) at the Library Station; 10 a.m. Saturday (June 2) at the Republic Branch Library; and at 5 p.m. Saturday (June 2) again at the Brentwood Branch.

A library staff member will walk you through the easy steps to check out and download e-books for free from the library’s collection and read them on your computer or compatible e-reader.
