Unclaimed Property

Is there a forgotten safe deposit box or an uncashed dividend check in your past? If so, that unclaimed property might be in the custody of Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel. Nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars are sitting in accounts awaiting claim by Missourians.

The Treasurer’s office maintains a website that allows the public to search these accounts and locate unclaimed property that belongs to them. The site can be found at: www.ShowMeMoney.com

Although the property is in the custody of the Treasurer’s office, it doesn't become the property of the state. In the case of monetary property, the proceeds are maintained in accounts awaiting their rightful owner (or owners). In the case of safe deposit boxes, the contents are cataloged when the property is submitted to the treasurer's office. After being held--for at least one year--the contents are converted to cash by sale at auction, after which, the proceeds are held for claim. A major exception is made for unclaimed military medals. These are held awaiting their rightful owners in perpetuity.

The treasurer's office website also has information for business owners and others who might have property that they need to submit to the Unclaimed Property Division.
