New Camp Ground to be Dedicated by Girl Scouts
“Three hundred girls from the 18 Girl Scout troops of Springfield and the eight Brownie packs will gather at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning at their newly acquired permanent camp site north of Zoo park on Bolivar road for a dedicatory ceremonial.
“The executive council recently purchased a half-acre of land on a wooded hillside where a stone cabin is to be built for Scouts to camp during the summer months.
“On November 30, the executive council met with O. T. Mullinax, district NYA supervisor, who promised to supply labor for the erection of the cabin. Plans have been drawn which show the completed stone cabin with a winding driveway and proper landscaping. There will be a huge fireplace in the main room and it is hoped that a recreation room will ultimately be built in the basement.
“The purpose of the camp is to provide a place for Girl Scouts to gather near home instead of going to some distant place to learn outdoor cooking and woodlore.
“At the ceremonial tomorrow, flag-raising will be conducted by three golden eaglets, Mary Simon, Marion Buchanon, and Mildred Moore. Virginia Mecord and Virginia Smith will assist. Mrs. Warren White, Scout commissioner, will be in charge.”
The photograph above is from the following day's paper and is captioned "Dedication of the new camp site for Springfield Girl Scouts ended yesterday with the flag-lowering ceremony by uniformed golden eaglets. As 'To the Colors' was sounded on the bugle, Marion Buchanan slowly lowered the flag. Behind her are Mildred Moore and Ina May Roberson. Two other members of the flag detail are not shown. In the background a section of the 150 Scouts who attended the ceremony can be seen saluting. Mrs. Warren White, commissioner, and Mrs. J. N. Morton broke ground for the stone cabin to be built with NYA labor on the recently purchased half-acre of wooded hillside just north of Zoo park on Bolivar road. Work will begin immediately."
It is believed that this Girl Scout Camp was superseded by the Finbrooke camp in Christian County in the late 1960's.
