Ozarks Author Janet Dailey Dies at 69
Janet Dailey, a nationally known Ozarks writer, passed away Saturday at her home in Branson, according to multiple news reports published today. She was 69.
The Branson Tri-Lakes News reports that Dailey was a New York Times bestselling author whose romance novels and other books sold more than 325 million copies in her lifetime.
Dailey was born in Storm Lake, Iowa but lived in Branson since 1978. Her 155 books included an Americana series of 50 novels, one set in each state, as well as the “Calder” series, the “Aspen” series and many other titles. In 1997 Dailey was sued for plagiarism by another bestselling romance writer, Nora Roberts. The suit was resolved through an undisclosed financial settlement.
In a 1995 interview with OzarksWatch magazine (preserved in our Local History collections), Dailey talked about advice for aspiring writers.
"The best and the worst advice I ever got was to write about things I knew!" she said. "I realized the wisdom of this advice, but when you are a very young person growing up in rural Iowa, where does it leave you? In time, of course, I realized that I could write about anything I wanted to." After a moment she added, "After researching it."
