What's New in Publishing

A few times a year staff at the Library present a What's New in Publishing for other staff. We recently presented at our Staff training day and want to share the information.

The staff use information from various sources to gain titles of interest, titles that will get some publicity, or just things we think our customers might enjoy that are in pre-publication, about two or three months out from being printed. Generally we don't do the "bestseller" types of titles, but focus on other things like sequels, trends in publishing, debut novels that are garnering atterntion, etc.  We look at initial print runs, number of copies that our vendors are stocking, and in some cases our wonderful vendors even provide some titles and other information  giving us the industry inside scoop for our presentation.

Here are a few of the titles and trends for adult readers that we highlighted at the presentation.  Most of the titles won't be available for checkout for a few months, but you can get in line for when they are published.

Celebrity biographies are generally popular and this publishing season follows that trend. Andy Cohen has written the Andy Cohen Diaries: a deep look at a shallow year, John Cleese tells his story in So Anyway and Carlos Santana brings his story of light in Universal Tone.

Political writings will start to increase as the next Presidental election gets closer.  A title in that arena is God, Guns, Grits and Gravy by Mike Huckabee.

When Books went to War by Molly Manning tells the story of books being shipped to American troops overseas in World War II.  Another book in the history area is Eric Foner's Gateway to Freedom: the hidden history of the underground railroad.

Book of strange new things by Michel Faber, Boston girl by Anita Diamant, Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion and Mime order  by Samantha Shannon are just a few titles in the fiction world that were highlighted at the presentation.

While this is just a very small sampling of titles being published in the next few months, know that there are many more coming to the Library's collection.
