Celebrating Healthy Weight Week
The idea of "healthy weight" should not be confused with "weight loss." This article is not about weight loss. The goal is to give you, the reader, some tools to distinguish what your healthy weight is, what it is not and some resources to help you achieve it. To find out if you are at a healthy weight for your body type, doctors recommend determining your Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is a measurement used by doctors, trainers and clinicians to record and assess a person's body fat, derived from dividing the weight by height squared. For more details on BMI, click here.
It is a common assumption that the only people concerned with acheiving a healthy weight are those who are or consider themselves overweight. However, people who are underweight have their own set of unique challenges. People who are underweight are at risk for more infections because their immune system is often depleted and they often have poor physical stamina. Underweight people have a heightened risk for osteoporosis. There are a host of reasons that a person may become underweight, including genetics, an underlying medical condition or a lack of food.
