Take a "Roadtrip with a Raindrop;" Learn About Life in Springfield During WWI; Pick Up a New Computer Skill this Summer

If you’ve ever longed to take a road trip for the sheer pleasure of discovery, you may draw inspiration from one successful adventurer at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, in the Library Center auditorium. Travel photographer Gayle Harper’s multimedia presentation chronicles her colorful, 90-day road trip along the Mississippi River Road, and the coffee table book she produced about it.

At 6:30 p.m., Harper will sell and sign her book, “Roadtrip with a Raindrop: 90 Days Along the Mississippi River,” and at 7 p.m. she’ll present the stories and faces of the people she met along the way. You can preview the journey on her book trailer at www.gayleharper.com.

Harper was inspired upon learning that a drop of rain falling into the headwaters of the Mississippi travels 90 days before reaching the Gulf of Mexico.

Also at 7 p.m. on June 25 across town in the Library Station’s Frisco Room, Library Local History associate Michael Price will talk about what life was like in Springfield during World War I. Hear how residents supported the war effort while Greene County men fought in the trenches of France. This is a prelude to the formal opening of a new website already live at missourioverthere.org, which chronicles Missourians’ role in World War I.

Got some extra time this summer? Consider taking that computer course you’ve talked about getting to “someday.” The Edge Community Technology Center, a modern classroom in the lower level of the Midtown Carnegie Branch, has a new schedule of classes for July-December at thelibrary.org/edge and in the Edge catalog in all the library branches.

You can learn how to use all your digital devices, download to your e-reader, master all kinds of computer programs, Photoshop, Web design. A July 16 class will rescue those just learning Windows 8. The Edge Mobile lab makes regular visits to most of the branches, too.

There are hundreds of options for adults, and there’s never a fee. Interested? Call the Edge at 837-5011.
