Steve Yates Talks About "Sandy and Wayne" Feb. 6; Busy Time for Passport Service

Sandy and Wayne: A Novella by Steve YatesAuthor Steve Yates loves returning to his native Ozarks – in person, and in his fiction. You may recall “Morkan’s Quarry,” “The Teeth of the Souls” and “Some Kinds of Love” – all rooted in the Ozarks.

The Mississippi-based writer returns to the Ozarks again at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, in Library Center meeting room B to talk about his new Ozarks-based novella, “Sandy and Wayne.” The event is free; Yates will sell and sign his book after the event.

“Sandy and Wayne,” published in paperback by Dock Street Press, is a love story set in the rugged, crumbling shale of the Boston Mountains in Arkansas. Sandy Coker is the lead inspector for the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department. Wayne Sheridan is the dirt foreman on the biggest heavy construction job Sandy has ever supervised. Steve Yates tells the story of two lost hearts, their harbored ambitions, and the secret that threatens to tear them apart.

This has been a particularly busy season for passport applications at the Library Center and Library Station, and not all of it is for summer travel. The recent dust-up about the Real ID issue has spurred calls from patrons worried they needed a passport instead of a Missouri driver’s license to board a domestic flight or enter a federal facility.

Recently, U.S. State Department officials confirmed that a passport is not necessary for domestic flights. The state received a two-year extension on the ID issue, so state IDs will continue to be accepted at airport security checkpoints. Travelers have until Jan. 22, 2018, to use their current Missouri driver’s license to travel.

People aren’t as panicky now, says Library Center Reference Manager Kathi Woodward, “But the numbers haven’t let up as people still feel like they want to go ahead and get their passport so they’re ready when the time comes that it’s necessary.”

The process goes faster if passport applicants come in with all the required documents and checks. For full instructions, visit the site travel.state.gov.
