Big Read Ends with Great American Medicine Show April 30; Temporary Brentwood Site Opens May 3

Are you ready to purge that melancholy of winter? Primed for a bona fide, jim-dandy time? Then do as Professor B.T. Farquar says and “Step right up folks, the greatest one-man show west of the Mississippi is about to begin.”

The Charlemagne of Charlatans, Professor Farquar will set entertainment back more than a century to the days of the old-time medicine show on Saturday, April 30, at two libraries. He will perform at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Library Station Frisco Room and again at 7 p.m. that night in the Library Center auditorium.

Farquar’s visit is the final event of the library’s month-long Big Read, which celebrated the book “True Grit” with authors, historians, cowboy poets and programs for the smallest buckaroos.

Unlike yesteryear’s snake-oil hucksters, Farquar peddles no elixers, but he freely dishes out the best medicine of all – laughter. In keeping with the spirit of “True Grit,” the professor promises a family-oriented program featuring songs of that period, including ballads of Jesse James and Cole Younger.

Brentwood Branch fans have already gotten a glimpse of the temporary site in the Brentwood Center. The site opened April 19 only for pick up of reserved items.

The temporary Brentwood site will open for regular business – with limited services, as planned – at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 3. Regular hours are 10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. The Library storefront in the Brentwood Center is at 2720 S. Glenstone Ave. Here’s a hint: The library is between Mr. Blackwell’s and Gracie’s. You’ll see our LIBRARY temporary sign above the door.

The temporary Brentwood site will remain in operation during the six to nine months of the Brentwood Branch renovation. No outside book drop is planned at the temporary site, but you may drop returns after hours at any other library branch; at the Price Cutter Plus Book Stop, 3260 E. Battlefield Road; and the large drop box on the Mercy Hospital campus near the corner of South National Avenue and Cherokee Street.
