Get the Scoop on New Reads for Fall and Beyond

Want the inside scoop on new fall books? Want to learn about future best-sellers before they become best-sellers? Then join the Library’s 4th Annual Book Buzz from 10-11:30 a.m. Sept. 12 in the Library Center auditorium.

Brad Simpson, with Penguin Random House – which bills itself as "the world's first truly global trade book publisher" – will buzz about upcoming books, share book catalogs and tote bags.

Our librarians did a little sleuthing of their own and came up with this list of good reads due on the shelves in September. Be among the first to check them out by placing holds on thelibrary.org/catalog.

Adult Nonfiction

"Vietnam War: An Intimate History" by Geoffrey Ward and Ken Burns, the companion to a 10-part, 18-hour PBS documentary to be aired in September.  .

"Alone: Britain, Churchill, and Dunkirk: Defeat Into Victory." Michael Korda combines epic history with rich family stories to chronicle the outbreak of World War II and the events leading to Dunkirk.

"The Odyssey of Echo Company: The 1968 Tet Offensive and the Epic Battle to Survive the Vietnam War" by Doug Stanton. On January 31, 1968, the North Vietnamese attacked 36 South Vietnam cities, 12 soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division fighting hand to hand for survival.

Adult Fiction

"Sourdough." San Francisco's technology and food cultures collide and collude in Robin Sloan's latest novel following "Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore."

"Love and Other Consolation Prizes." Against the backdrop of post-Victorian vice, suffrage, and celebration, Jamie Ford writes of innocence and devotion in a world where everything, and everyone, is for sale.

"Something Like Happy" by Eva Woods. Annie Hebden is stuck in her boring job, in a life no 35-year-old would want. Deep down, she is mourning a terrible loss. Hiding away is safer than remembering what used to be – until she meets eccentric Polly Leonard.

"Salt Line." Holly Jones Goddard’s dystopian tale of survival and humanity focuses on adrenaline junkies who jump “the Salt Line.” How far will they go for their freedom once they decide what freedom really means?
