Baby Boomers Can Grow Their Interests at the Library; Get Ideas for Thanksgiving Dinner Nov. 9; Watch an Animal Paint Nov. 11

Here’s a stunning statistic that has the Library world thinking ahead: Springfield City Manager Greg Burris recently told a gathering of nonprofit agencies that, nationally, 10,000 Baby Boomers will retire every day for the next 19 years. Over 70,000 people over 55 live in Greene County.

The trend presents rich opportunities for community agencies that need skilled volunteers, experienced leaders and mentors. Boomers are also passionate, lifelong learners, and many are looking for new skills and hobbies, whether it’s mastering Facebook or the latest Windows software; learning photography; eBay sales or – yes – improving your memory power.

If you yearn to learn, the Library’s got you covered. And it goes way beyond books.

Adults work hard to become masters of their spheres – teaching, homemaking, dentistry, marketing, banking – but that can leave little time for other pursuits. Whether you’re a mid-career adult or post-retirement, the Library has free classes on everything from computers to iPad skills; Pinterest to Photoshop; iMovie to YouTube; and even “How to De-Junk Your Life,” if you’re finally getting around to cleaning out the garage.

Some of the classes are instructor-led at the Edge Community Technology Center below the Midtown Carnegie Branch and at four other branches. More sessions are available at the Edge or online with your library card through Lynda.com, at thelibrary.org/lynda.

You can see a full schedule in the Edge catalog free at any branch, or visit thelibrary.org/edge, or call 837-5011.

This sounds like fun: Watch a zoo critter give a painting demonstration at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, in the Library Center auditorium. Zoo experts will discuss how they provide animal interactions and training through art, and then let a critter do the rest.
