This Week at the Library: "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," Super "Star Wars" Saturday and Holiday Shopping

Adults are in for a Christmas story with a historical twist when Springfield native Elaine Graham Estes explores the history of Clement Clarke Moore and his 1822 poem, “A Visit from St. Nicholas” from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, in the Library Station Santa Fe Room.

We know the poem as the holiday favorite “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” and Estes says there’s so much more to know. The retired former director of the Des Moines Public Library will also talk about her collection of 200-plus illustrated editions, parodies and collectibles on display there through February.

If your family missed the Holiday Store for Kids at several branches on Saturday, Dec. 2, no worries – the Holiday Store remains open at the Library Center daily through Sunday, Dec. 10 in meeting rooms A and B. The store features fun and useful gifts priced at 25 cents to $6, so a child can have fun selecting for everyone on their holiday gift list. It’s perfect for children through age 18. Volunteers are available to help young ones, but parents or older siblings are welcome to help, too.

The store is open Monday-Friday, 2:30-7:30 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m.; and Sunday 1-4:30 p.m.

The store always has like-new books, CDs and DVDs for all ages that make great gifts, too. There’s no tax, and sale proceeds go back to your library district.
