"Equal Means Equal" Screening & Panel Jan. 21; Travelogues to Scratch Your Itch to Travel; Learn to Play Chess

"Equal Means Equal" film poster“Equal Means Equal” is an award-winning 2016 documentary that looks at a timely topic – women’s struggles stemming from an absence of explicit protections in the U.S. Constitution.

The Library Center will host a screening of the film and a panel discussion from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Jan. 21 in the auditorium. The free event is presented by Springfield Missouri Feminists.

Director Kamala Lopez examines real-life and precedent-setting legal cases ranging from workplace harassment and domestic violence to sexual assault and health care.

The panel features Stacy Sherrod, Advocates of Planned Parenthood; Krista Moncado, The GLO Center; Paige Oxendine, ROSIE; and Jean Knapp from Moms Demand Action. Moderator will be Dr. Holly W. Holladay, assistant professor, Missouri State University’s Department of Media, Journalism & Film, and representing the American Association of University Women. For details, call 616-0554.

Now that we’re in the depths of January, are you daydreaming yet about summer travel? Two travelogues may satisfy your fantasies.

On Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 12:30 p.m. in the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch, hear Paul Jackson recount the details of his 2,700-mile mountain bike journey – the Tour Divide Mountain Bike Race – along the Rocky Mountains from Canada to Mexico.  Call 883-1974 for details.

On Thursday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium, learn about some less-intense bike outings closer to home. Outdoors enthusiast Sony Hocklander, who specializes in print and video storytelling, will present Get on the Greenways. She will share firsthand tips about favorite Ozarks Greenways trails and what makes each one unique. She’ll also share ideas for pairing trails with other fun activities just off the trail. If your 2018 goal is to learn a new skill, how about chess? You can take free lessons in six-week series that begins Wednesday, Jan. 17, in the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch. Sessions will run from 6-8 p.m. over six consecutive Wednesdays, ending Feb. 21. The Springfield Park Board Chess Club offers this introductory course, which covers winning strategies and tactics.
