Panthers Set Record at NAIA Meet
Springfield March 4, 1983
"The Drury College swim team tallied 82 points to finish in third place at the end [of] first-day action at the NAIA National Swimming and Diving Championship Thursday. Drury, the defending national champion, trails Simon Fraser University with 110 points and Denver University, who has 102 points.
"Action in the three-day meet will continue today with the 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, 400-yard individual medley, 200-yard freestyle, and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
"Drury’s 400-yard medley relay team of Sean Allison, Dave Volland, Kurt Keuser and Ron Staab took first place, setting a new NAIA record with a time of 3:25.5. Leading off the relay, Allison also broke the national record in the backstroke with a time of 51.45 seconds. Staab finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.2 seconds.
