Library Raising $10,000 for February Endowment Challenge; Black History Month Events Include Artist Reception

Development Director Melissa AdlerTen thousand dollars in 28 days. That’s our challenge. Will you help us?

The Springfield-Greene County Library District has been challenged to raise the money in February for the new Laton Endowment, an unrestricted fund held at the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. If we meet the $10,000 goal, CFO will contribute another $5,000.

That’s exciting, because the endowment will provide new, sustainable income for the Library, while the disbursements from the growing fund will allow us to add more services, technology and more for you every year.

The Library Foundation plans a variety of fundraisers to help meet the $10,000 goal: Buy a $1 paper heart at any library branch, write your name or loved one’s name, and we’ll display it in the library. Soon, you can enter a raffle at the Library Center for a large gift basket from the Between Friends Gift Shop. Attend a wine tasting Feb. 23 sponsored by The Library Foundation. You can also make a tax-deductible donation by Feb. 28 by going to yourlibraryfoundation.org and click the Donate Today button. For details on these and other upcoming opportunities, and for wine tasting tickets, call Development Director Melissa Adler at 616-0586.

If you’re considering a gift to the library in 2018, this is the perfect time – any gift toward the challenge is worth more because of the CFO match.

The Springfield-Greene County Libraries will celebrate Black History Month with a variety of children’s storytimes, book discussions, an African American Read-In event Feb. 22 and one unique photography exhibit through February at the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library.

In her exhibit “King of the Ozarks: Family Stories,” photographer Joyce McMurtrey has captured the story of a multi-generational, African-American family that has lived, loved, struggled and thrived in southern Missouri for more than 150 years.

Meet her at an artist reception at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Midtown Carnegie Branch. She promises to share her artistic process and stories behind her portraits of the family.
