Coming Up at the Library: Maker Camp, Blue Train Concert and Christian the Magician

Library staff feel an intense responsibility to help parents help their children be successful in school and life. We’re intentional in designing storytimes and hands-on activities for the youngest children; brain challenges and writing clubs for older kids and teens.

The Maker Camp series starting this week for grades 1-6 is one such program that stimulate learning. The series runs 2-4 p.m. Thursdays, July 5-Aug. 2, in the Library Station Story Hour Room.

A lot of learning, experimenting and discovery happens when kids are encouraged to do things like take apart computers, play with electronics and make cool stuff with found objects – with supervision! Each week staff will provide new projects and age-appropriate challenges for participants. A parent or legal guardian must sign a waiver for participation in some of the projects. For more details call 865-1340.

It’s hot outside and cool inside the libraries, a perfect time to catch contemporary bluegrass band Blue Train in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Library Center auditorium. The concert is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Add this one to your calendar: Christian the Magician is the resident magician at the fantastical St. Louis City Museum. He’ll bring his show to Springfield at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14, for grades K-4 at the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch. His show is full of surprises and audience participation. And yes, he just may make a kid from the audience float in mid-air!
